Tower Bridge to close for maintenance work As part of a £6.5 million scheme to carry out important maintenance on City of London Bridges, Bridge House Estates have announced that Tower Bridge will close for two months towards the end of 2010 to allow a total re-painting of the metal structure. There will be additional closures but the timings of these have yet to be announced. Owned by the City of London Corporation, this famous landmark has a weight limit of 17 tonnes. Today some 40,000 vehicles cross Tower Bridge daily and it opens for river traffic about 900 times a year. It is necessary to close the Bridge as all of the old paint that comes off the structure needs to be collected up for environmental reasons. To do this whole sections of the Bridge will need to be enclosed, restricting access for pedestrians and vehicals alike. In addition there is also a plan to mount a clock counting down the 2012 Olympics on the Bridge, so look out for this towards the second half of 2008. More >> |
