The Great River Race 2008 The Race will be run over the familiar, though still challenging, 22-mile course from Richmond, Surrey, to Island Gardens, Tower Hamlets opposite the Cutty Sark at Greenwich. The winners will receive the Challenge Trophy of The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of The River Thames and become the 2008 UK Traditional Boat Champions. Every competitor will qualify for a coveted hand-lettered participation certificate. As usual, any traditional-style, coxed boat, propelled by a minimum of four oars or paddles, without sliding seats or riggers, may take part. Each boat is computer-handicapped according to its potential performance, so everyone has an equal chance in this ‘slowest away first, fastest last’ handicap race. One of the best places to witness this astonishing sight is from London Bridge or along the Thames Riverpath between London Bridge and Tower Bridge at Potters Fields Park.
