The Fear of Falling

Consisting of a series of beautiful life-size underwater portraits, The Fear of Falling explores our human connection with water and the changing relationship with the present moment whilst submerged. Period costume from around the advent of photography is worn throughout the series.

The Artists: EMMA CRITCHLEY & SOPHIE LEWIS

As two artists, from unique yet similar backgrounds, they have been working together since 2004 exploring shared ideas around their connection with water. Through this evolvement and their individual approaches to both content and medium they have formed a complementary and dynamic working partnership together. In The Fear of Falling their intention is to produce of body of work that will present new ways to understand their relationship with water and challenge people's perceptions of present day consciousness.

With a gentle nod towards the Industrial Revolution and making processes surrounding that period, the portraits pose the question; could the shifts in consciousness whilst immersed be akin to those experienced centuries ago?
The Fear of Falling is to be exhibited at the Shunt Lounge at London Bridge this September, a stunning venue empathetic with the subject matter of the work. A second exhibition, sponsored by Metro Imaging, will be held in 2009.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England, Photofusion Photography Gallery, Action Underwater Studios amongst other prominent organisations.
